Set entirely on location in Oaxaca, Mexico, Hope, Soledad tells the story of cultural separation and exploration through the eyes of two women divided by a border, yet brought together on an unexpected journey. Knowing the power of the tale they created, AVGA principal and cinematographer Luis Guizar and director Yolanda Cruz then began their own journey to bring it to the screen.
Working with a small budget, Luis opted to helm the camera himself, working in front of and behind the lens to craft every frame in a truly authentic and natural fashion. Essential to his process was a reliance on the landscape around him, starkly capturing its essential light and beauty while grounding his characters in the homeland that connects them. The aesethic is cinema and documentary in equal measure, giving the film a visual narrative as intricate and wondrous as any studio production.
