About to receive a major award for the renovation and historic preservation of its iconic D.C. campus, The Duke Ellington School of the Arts wanted an evocative way to use it as a platform to challenge the presumed goals of architecture for education, and what can be possible when history and community are respected instead of replaced.
Rather than a typical architecture tour, we created intimate spaces within the walls of Ellington for candid discussion, allowing design to inform an exploration of intent, and the complex relationships that developed between educators wanting to honor the school’s past, and the professionals charged with building its future. The result is a short documentary with compelling lessons for all audiences, within a story that celebrates the human spirit.
