Challenge

Realizing that a world record-setting voyage through both passages of the North Pole was only possible because of rapid ice melting, veteran polar explorer Børge Ousland challenged us to create a breakthrough way to educate a global audience and provide a platform to combatting climate misinformation. We suggested that he bring the world with him in real time.

Response

Recruiting Google and Discovery Networks as core partners, our team created a satellite-based live stream connected to YouTube, Google Maps and social media. At any point, an online audience could follow the harrowing 3.5 month journey in real time, view footage, images and video diary entries, and even interact with crew members. Together with AVGA-filmed material, all elements were brought together into a follow-up documentary and multimedia education campaign, followed by a book and speaking tour.

Result

  • Voyage was live streamed by over 2 million viewers worldwide
  • Follow up documentary and book reached millions more
  • Became a Google case study on effective CSR and integrated content development
  • Inspired other explorers to recreate the journey in the name of climate awareness
